WordPress, the semi-user-friendly-but-also-semi-hellish website client we use doesn’t allow people to download files with a click unless the file is an archive (WinRAR/WinZip) or the user is registered. ‘Guest’ users wanting to download a non-archived file will only open the file within the browser, blocking file transfer.
We are sick of website registrations. One more damn username and password to remember.. no thanks. If pacati.net had advertising, we’d need registered users to generate usage statistics, but we’ll never have ads. So we’ll never be an annoying website that requires a password with alt-casing, a special character, a number, and at least 8 characters. And then when you choose a password that meets the requirements they gotta insult you by telling you it’s “weak.” Oh no! Somebody might hack into my account for a website I don’t care about and post as me! What will people I will never meet think of me? Then the website gotta text you a confirmation code. Oh and now you gotta unsubscribe from their fucking emails, not that you ever subscribed. Fuck all of that. Fuck it right in the eye.
We don’t mean to sound bitter, we just haven’t had any sugar in a very long time.
So you don’t have to register, but it requires the user trust an archive download. Since most know that basic malware detection is built into operating systems now, we think it’s not unreasonable to ask for that microscopic level of trust so we can sleep soundly at night knowing we’re not just another annoying website that triggers bitter people into beating puppies.
Thanks for reading, and so on.
